My name is Mya and I have always wanted to be a ninja. I even have a pair of nunchucks to show for it.
Growing up, I used to watch my brother and his friends pretend ninja-ing: jumping off things, rolling around, but usually it was just making a lot of "Hiyyyaaaaah" sound effects and doing pseudo ninja moves with their hands. Like most young girls, I idolized my brother. I followed him around everywhere, usually against his wishes. We played soccer in the gravel field without shoes, we climbed things, we hiyyyaaahed it all over town.
It was a dream of mine- to move like a ninja, to be a ninja, to everything... ninja. But I was far from a ninja. I wasn't athletic. We grew up poor so I never got to be in any extra curricular activities. I was horrible at sports. I played basketball in high school... did not score a point all season. I was on the 7th grade soccer team- my moment of glory was that one time the ball bounced off of me and into the goal. I didn't do anything. One would say I was even clumsy. My friends used to call me Kramer from Seinfeld because I would stumble into rooms like it was nobody's business.
Not only was I not athletic, but I was really unhealthy. I was not overweight, but I was one big walking Jager Bomb (that's a shot made up of Jagermeister & Redbull). I smoked. I partied. I drank excessively. I didn't exercise. I didn't know how to cook. I ate junk food crap. Chef Boyerdee and instant noodles were my jam. I never touched a vegetable. I used to stop by the gas station to pick up food before going to work. Chevron Cuisine was my breakfast & lunch. Dinner was takeout or canned soup.
But then I met this guy that would later become my husband. He ate these colorful things called vegetables. And he cooked. And he exercised. And I thought he was cute and so I tried all the above and you know what? It wasn't that bad. I found out that I liked how I felt after exercising. I realized that home cooked meals actually tasted a lot better than packaged food. Oh, you can make spaghetti and meatballs from scratch instead of from a can? WOW.
And so I committed to making exercise a daily habit. And then I tried this cooking thing. And then I got really good at cooking. And eventually, I got really good at working out. I just kept practicing and wow, it paid off. I got strong. I felt so capable. I could bang out pushups. I felt like a total badass! I was WINNING. But I didn't happen overnight. It was 10 years in the making.
I learned that if I can do it, so can you. You may see other trainers that have been athletes their whole lives and think, oh, they've always been like that. I am a prime example of a regular girl that took charge of her life and became whatever she wished.
Flash forward to today:
I turned my ninja wannabeness into a way of living: the Winja Way. Under the Winja Way, I bring attention and direct my energy to: improving myself, improving others, and improving my environment. Enjoying the process and having a blast as a Winja are the foundations of what I'm about.
As a Winja, I dance (poorly), practice my ninja skills and laugh my butt off daily. I squeeze every last drop of awesome out of lemons. You can find me honing my love of cooking, working as a nurse and personal trainer or on some adventure.
My core values of health, vitality and service to others give me the passion to fuel my smoke-bomb filled existence. Wanting to help others made nursing a natural fit. What I didn't expect was the influence my patients would have on me. I gained a deeper appreciation for what an able body can do and decided to help others achieve this through fitness.
My focus is now on health promotion. I know how powerful nutrition and exercise are to a high quality of life. I hope to leverage that belief and touch the lives of many as I push this idea forward.
I want to be your cheerleader as you get stronger. I want to be there when your self-confidence explodes. I will keep you accountable. I want to help you achieve the highest quality of life possible.
My Fitness Philosophy
For me, health and vitality is more than a number on the scale. Fitness is having the strength and energy to do all of the amazing things our bodies are made for! We are meant to walk, run, climb, crawl, play. Your body is dynamic, strong, and adaptable. I move the focus of personal training away from numbers on a scale and make my clients’ health and well-being our top priority.
I believe fitness should be fun. You should move your body because you love it, not because you hate it. Exercise is not torture, but a gift you’re giving yourself. I want you to think of fitness and proper nutrition as a lifestyle. You are on a journey to becoming a stronger and healthier version of yourself. You will walk away from every session feeling strong, confident, and comfortable in your body, regardless of where you start from.
Movement is what I am truly about. My dream is for you to move your body because you love it.
A training session with me is an experience. I provide my clients a unique combination of medical insight, fitness coaching and the occasional roundhouse kick macarena combo. I will be there for you start to finish. It will be real, challenging, and fun. We will laugh, dance, sweat and backflip, as a team, towards your goals. I offer training in-home, at my studio, or live streaming online.
Let's move together,
